China to have up-to-date information on United Kingdom and British Colonial companies which may request consular services and protection, in order that they may satiofy themselves, as in the former days of extraterritoriality, that genuine British interests are in consideration. For instance, a number of recently formed companies operating in China have acquired British nationality technically by registrutiɔn at Hong Kong, but the membership and capital is possibly entirely Chinese, and it does not seem appropriate for His Majesty's Consuls in China to act in their behalf except un ier vory special circumstances of flagrant injustice by the Chinese courts or authorities.

It would therefore assist His Majesty's Consuls in the watter of granting recognition and protection, and also appear to be in the interests of the companies themselves, if the latter were roquested to deposit the following documents with the Consulate in which their chief local office is situated or their business is chiefly carried on, for the purpose of establishing their genuinely British composition:-

a certified copy of the certificate of incorporation of the company or other document corresponding tilereto.
a copy of the memorandum and articles of association or other documents corresponding thereto.
a statement showing the nominal capital of the company and the amounts theroof which have been subscribed and paid up respectively.

a list of the directors of the company showing in respect of each director his full name and nationality and his address, and a report of any alterations in the list.
a list of the shareholders as periodically filed in accordance with the law under which the company is incorporated.
the name and address of the manager or other chief local representative in China, and any alteration concerning the repre- sentative.
